Burna Boy took America by storm when he appeared at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards. The singer performed his massive hits, “Last, Last” and “Kilometre,” giving the audience and those watching around the world a taste of his brand of Afro-fusion. The award-winning artist, who hails from Port Harcourt, Nigeria, has introduced a world music style that resonated well with the western audience. By mixing Afro-pop with western style R&B and hip-hop, Burna Boy promotes an innovative approach to world music. Burna Boy has won numerous awards in his home country, such as the Nigerian Entertainment Awards and MRV Africa Music Awards. Moreover, he has won several awards from prestigious western organizations, including the Grammy Awards, BET Awards, and MTV Europe Music Awards.
He made his breakthrough into the U.S. mainstream scene with his fourth album, African Giant. The record entered the Billboard 200 chart and peaked at number 104. African Giant also entered the mainstream charts of eight other countries, including the U.K. and Canada. Spawning eight singles, African Giant won Album of the Year at the All Africa Music Awards. In 2020, Burna Boy dropped his fifth album, Twice as Tall. Its lead single, “Wonderful,” debuted at number 16 on the Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart, while the album peaked at 54 on the Billboard 200.
